1:Anatomy: The human lungs are paired, cone-shaped organs located in the chest cavity on either side of the heart. The right lung has three lobes, while the left lung has two lobes, allowing space for the heart.
2:Respiration: The primary function of the lungs is to facilitate respiration, which involves two processes: inhalation (breathing in) and exhalation (breathing out).
3:Alveoli: The lungs contain millions of tiny air sacs called alveoli. These are where the actual gas exchange occurs. Oxygen from inhaled air diffuses across the walls of the alveoli into the surrounding capillaries, entering the bloodstream. At the same time, carbon dioxide, a waste product of metabolism, diffuses from the capillaries into the alveoli to be expelled during exhalation.

KIDNEY 4:Diaphragm and Intercostal Muscles: Breathing is achieved through the coordinated action of the diaphragm and intercostal muscles. When you inhale, the diaphragm contracts and moves downward, while the intercostal muscles expand the ribcage, creating a lower pressure within the chest cavity. This causes air to be drawn into the lungs. Exhalation occurs when these muscles relax.
5:Gas Transport: Oxygen binds to hemoglobin in red blood cells, forming oxyhemoglobin, which is then transported to body tissues. Carbon dioxide, produced as a waste product in cells, is carried by the bloodstream back to the lungs to be exhaled.
6:Regulation of pH: The lungs also play a role in regulating the body's pH balance. They can adjust the levels of carbon dioxide in the blood to help maintain a stable blood pH.
7:Protection: The respiratory system includes various protective mechanisms to prevent harmful substances from entering the lungs. These include the mucous lining of the respiratory tract, which traps foreign particles, and the action of cilia (tiny hair-like structures) that move mucus and trapped particles out of the airways.
8:Diseases: Various diseases can affect the lungs, such as pneumonia, bronchitis, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and lung cancer. These conditions can impact lung function and overall respiratory health.
9;Environmental Factors: Exposure to pollutants, allergens, smoking, and other environmental factors can damage the lungs and lead to respiratory diseases.
